Colour blocking is one of my favourite style that luckily keep coming back as a trend. I find it very modern, graphic and fun.
In earlier era the style usually used in actors costumes during 17th century such as the Harlequin costumes by costume Venetian Ludovico Burnacini. When Yves Saint Laurent showed a collection inspired by Piet Mondrian colour blocking sealed it hip place in fashion history.
This spring and summer designer from Milan, New York and Paris showed a lot of colour blocking in their collection. Some designer such as Italo Zucchelli of Calvin Klein, Dirk Bikkemberg Giorgi Armani for his Emporio Armani collection and Wooyoungmi used it on their streamlined futuristic utilitarian collection. Colour blocking also showcase their skills in fabric research by paneling different material in different tones and colours. Issey Miyake used the Japanese technique of dying called Ijime shibori where in the black dyed fabric where silk-screened with blue and red to get a result of soft colour-blocked windowpane check.
